Speech Recognition
You Tube’s parent company Google has announced on its blog that they will start to roll out automatic captions across the site. The machine generated captions will initially be generated in English and be found on 13 channels such as National Geographic and Columbia. Ken Harrenstin is the software engineer behind the technology and is deaf – the only option at the moment is a manual captioning service. In a iGoogle blog Ken mentions that the majority of user-generated video content online is still inaccessible to people. The programme that he’s created combines automatic speech recognition with the current caption system that’s available.
