The start of this tournament was marred with the attack on the Togo team bus which left two dead and many injured. With this shocking attack many thought that the tournament would have to be canceled in case any more attacks happened as many where fearing for their own safety.

Never the less after this attack no more was reported and the tournament was well under way many of the favorites were knocked out including Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon.
